In essence NetSupport gives you all the functionality of a remote
machine as if you were actually there. NetSupport does not replace your existing Windows drivers, will
work on any combination of supported platforms, and all the functionality
is included as standard.
The Package gives you the ability to:
NetSupport runs on the following operating systems:- All platforms are interconnectable and interoperable from all
others. Support for all platforms is supplied as standard.
The following network transports are supported: Workstations on Remote Networks and Standalone Workstations i.e.
non-networked are also supported over dial-up or ISDN connections.
You can also connect to TCP/IP Clients across the Internet. Remote Connection capability is supplied as standard.
NSM provides a variety of messaging capabilities : Broadcast a message to be displayed on the screens of all workstations
on the network that have the Client program loaded : Send a message to be displayed on the screens of all workstations
that are currently connected to the Control : Send a message to be displayed on the screen of the currently
selected Client only : Open a two way dialogue between a Control and a Client into which
either can type messages in real time whilst still displaying
the Client screen at the Control.
Remote Connectivity over dial-up and ISDN comes as standard with
NetSupport Manager. The highlights are : Connect to Clients on a Remote Network via a modem or other communication
link using the NetSupport Bridge programs. You can connect to
all workstations on a network through a single NetSupport Bridge
Standalone machines are supported for both dial-in and dial-out
connectivity As well as a large number of pre-configured modems NetSupport
also gives you the ability to set -up your own configurations
for special tasks Built in Modem Diagnostic utility makes problem solving extremely
easy Call Logging is built in to the Modem Diagnostics Maintains a database of frequently called numbers NetSupport functions over Microsofts Remote Access Service You can Connect to Clients over the Internet provided your routing
is correctly configured.
NSM supports colour resolutions up to 16.7 million colours at
both the Control and the Client. It also supports all video resolutions
up to 1600 x 1200. The Control and the Client do not have to be in the same video
resolution and further options are provided for optimising and
synchronising video configuration for best performance When taking over a Client NSM supports the following Control Modes
: Display the Client screen at the Control but only allow the user
at the Client to be able to enter keystrokes or mouse movements
Display the Client screen at the Control and allow both the Client
user and the Control user to enter keystrokes and mouse movements
Display the Client screen at the Control but only allow the Control
user to enter keystrokes and mouse movements.
PCI recognises that security is a major concern to users of its
NetSupport Manager Remote Control product, particularly now that
so many workstations are connected to the internet and other communication
links. With this in mind PCI have put a great deal of effort in
to ensuring that the product is secure whilst at the same time
retaining the ease of use. The approach adopted is to have user configurable functions that
enable customers to tailor the security levels to meet their exact
requirements. NetSupport Manager features multiple level security
at both the Client and the Control as well as in the Dial-up components. The security features have successfully passed stringent testing
in many organisations around the World including major banks and
sections of the US military. The following is a brief overview of the functions available most
of which are supplied in the standard product. Security Functions at the Client The Client is the workstation that is being Remote Controlled.
The Client can be configured for the following security functions.
You can use combinations of functions to tailor security to your
exact requirements Requires the User at the Control to enter a password before access
is granted. The password is encrypted at the Client. The Control
user must know the unencrypted password Displays a message at the Client that a Control user wishes to
access their machine. The user at the Client must explicitly agree
to the connection before access is allowed. This means that you
can effectively disable unattended access With this function you can allow remote users to Control the Client
machine but not transfer files Allows remote users to view the screen only and prevents them
from entering key strokes or mouse movements Maintains a log of all connections to the Client from a Control.
This includes the name of the Control and a date and time stamp
Sets a hidden security key that requires a matching security key
at the Control before access is granted. The security key can
be user defined or configured to be the unique serial number of
the product. Used in this way it means that only a specific Control
can connect to the Client. As all NetSupport Serial numbers are
unique to the individual licensee this prevents any other user
who obtains a copy of NetSupport from being able to Control another
licensees Clients By default NetSupport displays an indicator when a Control connects
to it to warn the user that they are being viewed. This function
ensures that the indicator does not become obscured under other
Windows Note that there is also an option to have a quiet mode key that
suppresses all indication at the Client that they are being watched.
This is only available by special order. When compression is turned data sent between the Client and Control
is effectively encrypted. This prevents outsiders tapping in to
the connection with say a data analyser and obtaining confidential
information Automatically reboots the Client after a Control has disconnected
The internationally registered port number for NetSupport under
TCP/IP is 5045. However you can configure the Client to use a
different port number to prevent general access via for example
the internet. You must of course ensure that your routers support
the new port number The NetSupport Client for NT is a 32 bit application that runs
as a service. This means that the program can start before you
log on under NT, thus supporting Remote Log-on If the Public password function is set then the NT machine is
not logged on, the user at the Control has to enter this password.
If it is logged on they have to enter the Client password if set
If the Client has a password but the NT workstation is logged
off you do not need to enter the NetSupport password to connect
to it. Effectively this means that you can enable users to access
the machine using NTs own security Security Functions at the Control The Control is the workstation that is doing the Remote Controlling.
You have the following functions. Sets a security key that is sent to the Client. If this does not
match the security key at the Client (if set) the connection is
refused. This function can be configured to use the NetSupport
Serial Number which is not user definable or generatable. All
Serial numbers are unique so you can force a Client to only allow
connection from a Control with the same NSM internal serial number
thus preventing other users of NetSupport being able to obtain
access. Available on request. Disables the File Transfer Function at the
Control Available on request. Disables the Lookup function at the Control
preventing unauthorised users from discovering the names and network
addresses of Clients Available on request Sets an encrypted password that must be entered before the Control
program will run Security Options on Dial-Up Links Dial-up support is provided by the NetSupport Bridge program which
comes as standard. This enables access to the workstation on which
the Bridge program is running (assuming a Client has also been
loaded) or to any machine on the Network which has a Client running. Because the NetSupport Bridge program "claims" the serial port
it is very secure. It has been tested with products that use the
serial port as a "back door" to gain access to a machine and proven
to effectively lock these out. You can of course choose to use other communication products to
provide your dial-in access such as Microsofts RAS product. The NetSupport Bridge program can be configured for the following
security functions : Requires the User at the Control to enter a password before access
is granted. The password is encrypted at the Client end. The Control
user must know the unencrypted password. This is in addition to
the Client password Maintains a log of all connections to and through the Bridge from
a Remote Control. This includes the name of the Control and a
date and time stamp The NetSupport Bridge can be run on any workstation on a network
and then provides dial-up access to any Client on that network.
This does not have to be a dedicated machine and can be an ordinary
workstation. You can set the Bridge to display activity for monitoring
purposes Causes the Bridge to dial-back the Control according to the password
entered at connection time. You can associate different telephone
numbers to different passwords giving the ability to set multiple
dial-back numbers.
