ITIL Laid Bare: Read The New White Paper

Take A Different Look At ITIL With Adventnet's Alex D Paul

Introduction
"After a few utterly boring Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) presentations and speeches completely based on the blue book in Las Vegas, L.A, London, Sao Paulo, Singapore, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney, I thought I should try
writing what IT managers really need to know in an interesting way so that they’ll actually read it."

"With all due respect, the blue book covers every aspect of ITIL Service Support and is the ultimate reference guide. This is for all those who don’t have the time and patience, but still quickly want the juice. I didn’t find an interesting ITIL Service Support article and here is my attempt in writing one. I hope you find it useful."

WiFi Manager: Hotspot Management For ISPs

WiFi Manager Addresses The Challenges of Hotspot Management
WiFi Manager allows Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISP) to easily, effectively and centrally manage their infrastructures, such as Access Points, Wireless gateways, Switches and Routers deployed at hundreds or thousands of remote locations. With support for devices from most of the prominent vendors in the market today, WiFi Manager is truly a multi vendor network management solution.

WiFi Manager automatically discovers the devices in the network, builds up an inventory database and monitors the infrastructure continuously for their health and other important parameters like the bandwidth used, the number of users associated, signal strength available to the connected users etc.

WiFi Manager also allows configuration of the important parameters (radio settings, security settings, services settings etc.,) and management of device firmware, giving WISP administrators full control of their deployment from a single central web console.

Is Your Network Safe From Attacks?

Security Manager Plus - Network Security Scanner and Vulnerability Scanning

With increasingly sophisticated attacks on the rise, the ability to quickly mitigate network vulnerabilities is imperative. Vulnerabilities if left undetected pose a serious security threat to enterprise systems and can leave vital corporate data exposed to attacks by hackers. For organizations, it means extended system downtimes and huge loss of revenue and productivity.

Vulnerability Assessment is a process of identifying the effectiveness of an enterprise network's security posture. The process qualifies the type of assets in the network, the probable areas for compromise and how to remediate vulnerabilities and protect assets. The core function of Security Manager Plus, network security scanner, is vulnerability scanning & detection of industry-known vulnerabilities on network assets and to offer remediation solutions.

Security Manager Plus enables you to scan assets and asset groups, view vulnerable assets and their complete security information, e-mail scan reports and take appropriate action to safeguard your assets based on the remediation solutions provided.

Enhanced Monitoring For Your SAP Server

Applications Manager Extends Support for SAP Server Monitoring.

ManageEngine Applications Manager has been upgraded to include monitoring of performance and availability for SAP deployments.

The complex architecture of SAP presents a challenge to when drilling down to know the root cause analysis of any bottle neck in the performance. The SAP monitor in Applications Manger helps monitor the application tier, database tier, web client user experience and the servers. With this, a SAP administrator can quickly identify any impending problem, send alerts and automate corrective action.

"We have found the URL sequences particularly useful as they handled the sequence of https login with redirects followed by replaying an entire use case of the web application and finally logout. It has been extremely well received within the department." said John MacEnri, Technical Architect, Department of Communication, Energy and Natural Resources, Ireland. "Agentless application performance monitoring is another big factor that tilted our buy decision."

Manage patches over the Internet - simply!

PatchQuest has overcome the difficulty of managing patches for remote sites and mobile workers. Consider the common scenarios:

Systems that are spread across different geographical locations or offices over the internet (applicable primarily to Service Providers)

Laptops that are often disconnected from the network (mobile users on the move)

Systems situated behind a NAT/PAT firewall or router (systems in different branches of an enterprise)

PatchQuest Release 4.3 is powered with an agent that can be used to manage such systems, where maintaining a dedicated network tunnel is not feasible; therefore allowing the communication over the internet. The only prerequisite is that the PatchQuest Agents should be able to contact the PatchQuest Server over the web (using HTTP).

PatchQuest is an automated, patch management software for distributing and managing patches, security hotfixes and updates across heterogeneous networks comprising of Windows, Red Hat Linux and Debian Linux systems, in just a few simple clicks.

ADManager Plus Cleans Up Active Directory

ADManager Plus has been upgraded with a complete solution to Clean up the Active Directory. The increase in size of an organisation and the continual change in roles and departments of employees, necessitates a need to allocate newer resources and proper management of unused accounts. These unused accounts present in the active directory are to be handled with utmost caution to avoid unauthorized access, which questions the security of your network. Any dormant/inactive account can turn malicious with time providing leverage for hackers. They are to be spotted regularly through continuous audits, and disabled or deleted.

ADManager Plus understands the difficulties faced by an administrator with conventional command line tools or scripts to identify then delete, disable or move unused accounts in Active Directory. It provides a single click solution for the administrator/help desk technician to generate a report on all inactive users/computers present in a Domain or Organizational unit for a given period of time. Using this report he/she can delete, disable or rearrange these suspect objects as needed.

Netflow Analyzer:The new 'Boss of QoS'

Netflow Analyzer now supports QoS Monitoring by adding DSCP mapping to its latest version V6.1.

In addition, users can create their own DSCP Groups to monitor class-based traffic patterns on per DSCP or per DSCP Group basis.

With this release, NetFlow Analyzer now enters the arena of QoS Monitoring -- the most crucial aspect of any network performance enhancement activity. QoS helps enterprises effectively allocate their existing bandwidth for high productivity applications. QoS defines the minimum level of service quality guaranteed for an application and is typically assigned for business critical applications to safeguard them against any kind of bandwidth crunch. An application with a higher QoS gets priority in receiving bandwidth allocation over one with a lower QoS value. DSCP mapping is the latest offering that is much more powerful than the earlier TOS (Type of Service). DSCP helps in verifying lapse in the enforcement of QoS policy like, were the traffic flows, whether packets are correctly labeled and marked as belonging to a particular QoS setting. NetFlow Analyzer 6 General Access is available for a free 30-day trial.

Whats new in NFA 6.1

Network snapshot: Quickly identify the overall traffic on your network and the busiest devices

Enhanced QoS reporting: User definable DSCP groupings and application level visibility into DSCP

Comparison reports: Compare traffic patterns on different devices and across different time intervals

Alerting on IP Groups: Ability to create alerts on IP groups

Note : NetFlow Analyzer 6.1 is only available as a full download. Service Pack to migrate to 6.1 from earlier builds will be available later.

Better Network Delivery With CISCO IPSLA

Now OpManager offers more powerful network control with CISCO's IPSLA technology.

With the help of an intuitive network dashboard, OpManager brings links availability and performance information to the fore. The average availability dashboard gives an immediate bird's eye view of the availability across the entire network in the specified timeframe, while the distribution chart shows the spread of availability within the same timeframe.

Sometimes a terrible network quality may be just as worse as no availability at all. A round trip time of 200ms across a link where the expected round trip time is 60ms is definitely unacceptable. The top 10 SLA violation chart displays the recent locations that witnessed an unexpected communication delay.

However, merely knowing that an outage or a delay has occurred is not sufficient. OpManager allows you to drill down to the map level displaying the various paths of communication between the source and destination and the round trip time across each underlying link.

OpManager, with CISCO's IPSLA technology, monitors the round trip information between the various sources and their targets and evaluates them against the expected average round trip time. Consecutively, any RTT violation across a link and its impact on the performance of the channel and the network as a whole is realized and appropriate violation and performance degradation alerts are raised.

Opmanager MSP one click remote control

The new OpManager MSP Remote Control Add-On enables you to work on your customer servers and desktops right from your office or home. It works over internet and is fast, secure, and smooth.

Firewall Friendly Architecture
OpManager Remote uses only the common ports used for browsing and hence it doesn't mandate punching a hole in your customer firewall. The remote control gateway, bundled along with the OpManager Central server, enables the required communication tunnel for you to see the remote server.

Secure, Fast, and Smooth.
OpManager encrypts the data between the remote machine and you, ensuring that you don't expose corporate data over the Internet. Moreover, the compression logic and the intelligent screen rendering mechanism ensure that you use fewer resources without sacrificing quality, ensuring a smooth experience.

Install in seconds
OpManager helps you to deploy agents in bulk. From the OpManager central interface select the list of servers/desktops and -> Click install. The agents will be automatically pushed to the remote machines, installed, and started automatically. And in an unlikely event of installation failure, you can manually download-and and install the agent

Be There
Once the agents are installed you are ready to access the servers remotely. Every device snapshot page would then display a "Remote Control" button for you to click and start a remote session. You may use the Flash viewer, ActiveX viewer, or the Java viewer. You can switch to the full screen view, take control of the server at the click of a button, and be there in real-time supporting your customers.

Be accountable - track remote sessions
Every time when your technical team remotely connects your customer machines OpManager maintains a record of wh why, who, and how long the remote session was established.

PassTrix Renamed PasswordManager Pro (PMP)

In order to keep product names closely allied with their functionality, PasswordManager Pro becomes the new name for the ManageEngine Password Management product, formerly known as PassTrix.

Networks Unlimited, the official ManageEngine distributor in the UK, is working hard to make the changes as swiftly as possible but there will be a transitionary period of some weeks whilst documentation and web sites are updated. The change concerns only the name and and does not affect the product, its specification or pricing.

In the meantime, PasswordManager Pro continues to provide a secure, centralised, web-based facility for control of access to shared administrative/privileged passwords of any 'enterprise resource' such as servers, databases, network devices, applications et al.

CWL Systems Chooses OpManager MSP Edition

Cambridgeshire-based managed service provider, CWL Systems, chooses OpManager MSP Edition for centralized remote management of its customer networks.

CWL Systems deploys and manages IT solutions that create strong business value and help customers build a more confident future. Focusing on back-office solutions and network infrastructure with a vertical focus in the financial and legal sectors, CWL works in partnership with clients to deliver successful projects that meet precise business objectives. Uncompromising quality standards and a large customer network have driven CWL Systems to optimize network management with OpManager.

Recently, CWL Systems have installed probes in ten customers sites, and have already received requests for more. Simon Murawski, senior network engineer at CWL Systems, says, "It will be a steady increase. We have 12 probe licenses currently and will have to buy more within the next week or so as we install the next few customers. Our plan is to install probes on all of our customers' networks that we cover. So the number of probes we are potentially going to be having will grow quite large".

After using a number of other competing network management products, CWL Systems narrowed down their search for a complete remote network management tool to OpManager. "The easy to use user interface is one of the reasons we chose OpManager over its competing products. Its well designed from the perspective of the customer. Also the dashboard status views are good for an instant graphical overview of all the customers' sites", said Simon. "The ability to monitor pretty much any device such as Cisco routers and firewalls, printers, servers, hubs switches and websites all within a very intuitive web interface are definite plus points." he added.

"Further, the addition of specific monitoring of exchange and active directory is of great help. While some of the competing products do allow easier addition of other monitors, they lack the overall, well put together integrated look and feel of OpManager." The fact that the MSP edition supports multiple customers with the probes, and the fact that the probe doesn't need to be installed on every monitored device is great. Other products require an agent to be installed on all devices, which can make the roll-out to a new site slow.

"MSPs require an enterprise-class monitoring tool that does not compromise on performance but provides an easy and appealing interface", said Dev Anand, the Product Manager for MSP Solutions at AdventNet. "At OpManager we target efficient performance at affordable price points."

ManageEngine Case History: Prolog UK

ServiceDesk Plus transforms Prolog's IT management

More than ever, organisations are driving their IT managers to focus IT spend where the business will get best value and biggest return. No longer can managers adopt the ‘buy Big Blue’ approach, seeking the perceived security of the big vendors whilst, inevitably, paying a premium on price.

At least, that’s the theory. In practice, human nature dictates that we tend to be wary of new vendors, no matter how good the product or its price. In the past, return on investment was been much abused by salesmen in an attempt to break down this barrier. Today, that is not good enough. IT Managers need to ‘experience’ the product, the service and the people involved, before parting with the company’s hard-earned cash.

This was the scenario faced by Richard Mawson, Head of IT for marketing services provider Prolog. For too long, Prolog’s 10-strong IT department had been using helpdesk software that had served well but was well past its prime. Despite the usual reluctance of users to change, Richard could see the unreliability of the software was impacting business performance and decided to replace it.

Having consulted the big names amongst the helpdesk software providers, Richard was surprised and disappointed to learn that his relatively modest requirements would incur a price of more than £9,000. After a little more searching, though, Richard came across ServiceDesk Plus, part of the ManageEngine range of software tools offered by the India-based software developer Adventnet.

With a feature set to match the market leaders and at less than half the price, ServiceDesk ticked all the boxes as far as Richard’s requirements were concerned. But could he put that all-important trust in a company unknown to him:

“Immediately, their web site was very encouraging. Case studies, awards, demonstrations, good literature and free trials – it’s all there. The forum was very active, which I think is always a good sign, offering some really useful support. But it was the people that really convinced me. Unusually, their software developers provide the technical support, so when you call with a query, you’re actually talking to the guys who designed the software. You really feel you’re getting good service.”

Having bought ServiceDesk, and the honeymoon period over, has the decision to go with ManageEngine paid off?

“ServiceDesk has transformed the way we deal with IT issues and greatly improved our service delivery. The queuing and business-rules features are excellent and the knowledge base is invaluable. We can now log each job and track it through to resolution, keeping a dialogue going with the end user.”

“It’s working so well that we’re considering expanding the reach of the helpdesk to a broader, centralised facilities management role - a sort of one-stop shop for all technical issues. Support from the UK distributor, Networks Unlimited, and from Adventnet continues to reassure me we made the right move.”

Any regret’s about not going with one of the better-known vendors?

“To the contrary. Most businesses, like Prolog, aren’t prepared to pay over-the-top prices just for the pleasure of working with a big brand. It’s my duty to get the best value for the business and, so long as new vendors put effort into building the customer relationship, then customers like me will make the switch. In this respect, ManageEngine is exemplary.”

Prolog UK
Prolog is one of Britain’s leading outsourced service providers for e-commerce solutions and mail order fulfilment operating a national storage and distribution infrastructure and advanced systems technology.

Prolog Marketing serves both commercial and public sector clients with POS handling, bulk literature storage and distribution, mailing services, bulk collation and packing and database management. These core services are supported by design, publishing and in-house print.

Prolog Connect provides inbound/outbound telephone marketing and customer services whilst Prolog Logistics specialises in national and international supply chain solutions.

ManageEngine Case History: SEEDA

Case History: South East England Development Agency (SEEDA)

SEEDA is one of those split-personality organisations. On the one hand dealing with the frantic commercial demands of small businesses and entrepreneurs, on the other hand having to comply with the rigorous regulatory requirements that come with being a government-based organisation. Seldom can there be a more wide ranging set of demands placed on an IT department.

Ask Carl Lawton, he should know. As the Senior Systems Administrator, Carl has responsibility for delivering reliable and efficient ICT services to approximately 500 internal customers, involved in regeneration and property development projects. On top of that, the IT Department is subject to annual auditing by the National Audit Office and Carl must continuously provide audit logs to support compliance with governance procedures. It is important that SEEDA`s IT reports are accurate and factual.

After six years of rapid growth, not surprisingly, SEEDA’s IT systems were beginning to creak a little under the strain. In particular, the helpdesk was an old sales-based application with an active directory that was not working and some old Crystal reports that were just inadequate. Carl recognised that a web-based solution would make life a lot easier and immediately looked at the big names - Remedy, Royal Blue, Trackit, etc. Back on his feet again (he fell over when he saw the price), Carl found ManageEngine’s ServiceDesk Plus, a web based help desk software tool with outstanding tracking and asset management capabilities. Functionality was on a par with the big names but with a much more sensible price.

Carl soon put ServiceDesk Plus to work on the 18 strong IT department located across the three SEEDA sites, prior to rolling out across the rest of the organisation. Immediately, ServiceDesk’s ability to log and track issues meant that incoming calls were fewer, freeing up the IT team in the process. Reporting on trends in service requirements (e.g most frequent callers) also meant that training issues could be identified and addressed. In this way, ServiceDesk Plus also provided the reporting required for regulatory and governance purposes.

“The affordability of ServiceDesk has removed one of the biggest barriers to maintaining our IT infrastructure and improving service delivery,” says Carl. “The combination of high functionality, low cost, simple, web-based software is a feature of the ManageEngine range that fits our requirements well and offers the benefits of a single source for our IT management solutions in the future.”

SEEDA
The South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) is one of nine Regional Development Agencies in England. SEEDA’s main role is to drive economic development in the South East. SEEDA’s work covers the same geographical area as the Government Office for the South East. Both organisations cover an area stretching from Kent to Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, to Milton Keynes at the northern end of the region and West Berkshire in the west.
SEEDA’s work includes

*regional regeneration
*making the South East a competitive location for business
*encouraging companies to invest in the South East
*ensuring that the right skills are available to match the needs of the South East labour market

ManageEngine Case History: Pendragon

Pendragon Corporate Services Take On Applications Manager
Many IT managers will tell you that hosted IT services are more about trust than technology. This being so, then the hosted service provider who manages clients’ critical business applications, must be the ultimate example of the ‘trusted supplier’. When that client is the UK Government, you know that the service provider must be a bit special.

Such is the case with Pendragon. For the past 7 years, Pendragon has provided Consultancy Services to both the Public & Private Sector, including high profile Government Departments, managing key servers and applications whilst providing penetration testing, secure networking and numerous other support services.

Central to Pendragon’s role is the hosting of 20 or so servers (covering over 60 Government websites and numerous Charity and Private Sector systems) running a range of heavyweight applications (eg Oracle) plus front-end web management services the likes of Apache and Tomcat. All the applications are running flat out, web servers receiving up to 22 million hits per month (for the bewildered, that’s 500 per minute), so monitoring and management are crucial. So crucial that Ian Poole, Pendragon’s Technical Director, decided that they needed the very best application-monitoring tool available.

The search was not straightforward, though, with several contenders demonstrating incompatibility to a greater or lesser degree. Then, after a quick Google, Ian came across ManageEngine’s Applications Manager.

“ We were pleasantly surprised,” says Ian. “We hadn’t heard of ManageEngine before but the features and the prices looked so good, we had to try it.”

And try it he did. Having put Applications Manager through its paces over an extended trial period, Ian came to the conclusion, “Some tools could meet some of our requirements some of the time, but Applications Manager is without doubt the only software tool on the planet that can do the lot.”

“Support was brilliant. We only had one small issue but the support team at Adventnet provided a piece of code that soon resolved the problem. Very quickly, Applications Manager had helped iron out the bugs in the client’s content management system and has become a vital element in our service delivery ever since.”

“There’s no room for error in this business. Increasingly stringent regulatory processes and governance policies will continue to make service levels a priority. Application Manager plays an important part in keeping control of SLA’s and, thanks to its reporting capabilities, we can respond to demands for accountability. Peace of mind is a wonderful thing!”

As the sun sets over Pendragons offices in Bristol, London & Cheltenham, the country rests peaceful in the knowledge that Pendragon and Applications Manager are doing their bit to keep the wheels of government turning.

Pendragon Global Consulting
Pendragon provides a broad range of business services and consultancy, including IT management. Engineers and support teams possess an extensive range of experience and expertise. These include customised industry standard applications or bespoke systems developed from scratch. The focus is on optimised IT, ranging from properly configured and deployed desktop PCs through to fully integrated, enterprise-wide and future-proof solutions.
