Applications Manager Includes Anomaly Detection

New ManageEngine Applications Manager Includes Anomaly Detection Capabilities for Increased Visibility Into Application Performance

ManageEngine, announces an updated version of ManageEngine Applications Manager, the company’s popular server and application monitoring software, now provids Anomaly Detection.

The Anomaly Detection feature alerts businesses to potential threats to application performance, allowing administrators to take preemptive action and preserve performance levels. With the new Applications Manager, administrators first create anomaly profiles using optimum server and application performance metrics as a baseline. Applications Manager then continually collects and compares performance data in real-time against the previously established optimum performance levels. If any differences between the real-time and optimum levels are detected, Applications Manager automatically generates notifications for review by the administrator.

Additionally, the new version of Applications Manager offers integrated application and Storage Area Networking (SAN) monitoring using the ManageEngine OpStor connector. This integration provides application performance details and storage device metrics in a single console, which in turn empowers IT administrators to more quickly troubleshoot performance issues.

And ManageEngine has designed an option to integrate website uptime and performance reports from Site24x7, the company’s hosted website monitoring solution. This integration helps administrators keep track of the performance of company websites from up to 17 different locations outside the data center, without the need for installing any additional software.

“We need to understand how critical applications are performing to ensure we keep our business operations functioning at an optimum level,” said Melissa Bertram, CooperVision, Inc. “ManageEngine Applications Manager allows us to do that. We can keep tabs on the performance and availability of key applications, servers and databases, from a single console. It gives us the information we need quickly and easily. I’m very pleased.”

“Traditionally, most IT administrators have taken a reactive approach to troubleshooting application performance issues,” said Gibu Mathew, product manager, Applications Performance Management Solutions, ManageEngine. “This can be difficult and time consuming at times. If they can shift from being reactive to problems toward a more proactive approach, their overall efficiency will improve and costs will be reduced. The new Anomaly Detection capability in Applications Manager can help them make this transition and realize these benefits.”
Pricing and Availability

ManageEngine Applications Manager is available as a downloadable file for both Windows and Linux platforms. A 30-day fully functional trial edition is freely available for evaluation from the website. Pricing starts at £530 for the Professional Edition; the Enterprise Edition starts at £5330.
ManageEngine Brings New Levels of Mobility to Enterprise IT Management with Latest Update to Flagship Network Management Solution

IT Administrators Can Now Access ManageEngine OpManager Over Smartphones, Manage Alarms Through Twitter And Receive Alerts Via RSS

ManageEngine announce a major update to the company’s flagship network management solution, OpManager, allowing IT administrators to manage their networks from anywhere, at any time of day.

The new OpManager 8.5 features an interface specifically designed and optimized for the latest generation of smartphones. OpManager 8.5 automatically detects the type, make and model of the accessing mobile phone or Personal Digital Assistant and redirects the user’s browser to the correct interface. The new mobile interface allows IT administrators to view network performance data; search for devices; manage alarms; and even perform troubleshooting functions, such as ping and trace route. The latest update to OpManager also integrates the software’s alarm management module with the social networking and micro-blogging service, Twitter. Alarms generated in OpManager can now be sent as Direct Messages to users’ Twitter accounts and users can then acknowledge, clear or delete the alarms by replying via Direct Message. Another important addition is to the fault management module in OpManager 8.5, which can now receive network alerts via RSS feed.

“You can’t put a price on the reliability of OpManager’s alerting capability,” said Randy S Hollaway, senior system administrator at Thorp Reed & Armstrong. “We’ve had many examples where we’ve had services go down where OpManager has given us the heads-up. It’s helped us pinpoint issues and find problems on the network and as a result fix it and provide better services for our end users. It’s a fabulous product.”.

“During the holidays, there were many of us who wanted our network management systems accessible from the palm of our hand, wherever we went,” said Shanmugam Krishnasamy, product manager for OpManager. “At ManageEngine we’ve made that possible with OpManager 8.5’s new mobile user interface. We’ve even extended the mobility offered by introducing alarm management via Twitter and by having OpManager alerts be available as RSS feeds. IT management is a 24x7 affair and OpManager will continue to provide real value around the clock.”

OpManager, used by over 8500 businesses worldwide, is a comprehensive network and IT infrastructure monitoring platform that offers advanced fault and performance management functionalities across network devices, servers, applications, databases and other IT infrastructure. Additional plug-ins bring within OpManager’s console advanced features such as network change and configuration management, in-depth network traffic analysis, VoIP monitoring and WAN Round Trip Time monitoring.

Key feature additions found in OpManager 8.5 include:

An optimized mobile user interface for smartphones such as the iPhone, Blackberry

Alarm management using Twitter

Alerts via RSS feeds

Secure and Effective Password Self-Service to End-Users

New ManageEngine ADSelfService Plus Provides Secure and Effective Password Self-Service to End-Users, Decreases Administrative Workload

ManageEngine announce the new version of ManageEngine ADSelfService Plus, a web-based self-service password reset portal, allowing end-users to reset their password, unlock their account and update their directory information, all without requiring the time and attention of administrators or help desk technicians. The new version also provides administrators with extensive reporting on the status of user licenses, flagging unused or terminated accounts, opening those licenses for use by other users.

The component within ManageEngine ADSelfService Plus that enables end-users to reset their passwords or unlock accounts right at their computers' logon screen has also been re-engineered to add support for 64-bit machines. Administrators may also use Group Policy Object (GPO) to simultaneously deploy this capability to multiple computers.

In addition to the new self-service capabilities described above, the updated version of ManageEngine ADSelfService Plus gives administrators greater security and control over their Active Directory implementations. For example, ADSelfService Plus tracks password expiration dates, issuing a report for administrators and emailing users with notice of the impending expiration. The system also ensures passphrase and security questions -- used to verify identity and access rights when a password is forgotten -- meet the organization's minimum criteria, preventing the use of unsophisticated, easily defeated passphrases or questions that may compromise the security of the account. User accounts can also be locked in the event of a "brute force" attack. The software also alerts the end-user via email should someone unauthorized reset their passwords or unlock their accounts.

"ADSelfService Plus has the right mix of functionalities that we were looking for, especially self update," said Mike Green, IT Services Project Manager, Rentokil Initial, "It does make a complete password self-service software."

End-users and administrators alike benefit from the new Corporate Directory Search function in ADSelfService Plus, which allows contact information for key personnel and colleagues to easily be found.

The new version of ADSelfService Plus supports Windows Server 2008 Active Directory and Windows 7.

"Managing Active Directory deployments can be challenging, especially if it is a medium or large-sized deployment, and we take the load off with ManageEngine ADSelfService Plus," said Manikandan Thangaraj, product manager, ManageEngine. "Our products allow administrators to focus on the important stuff and empower end-users to solve problems themselves."

Pricing and Availability:

ManageEngine ADSelfService Plus is available now for download at http://www.manageengine.com/adselfserviceplus. A 30-day trial with full functionality is also available for evaluation.

New Help Desk and IT Asset Mgmt for MSPs

ManageEngine Introduces Help Desk and IT Asset Management Software for Managed Service Providers

ManageEngine announces the general availability of ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus - MSP Edition, web-based help desk and IT asset management software, allowing Managed Service Providers (MSPs) to offer scalable and affordable help desk services to their customers. ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus - MSP Edition is designed to meet the demands of both the growing and the established MSP by increasing per-technician productivity and decreasing time-to-resolution for every customer.

Managed Services are a growing business, especially in today’s economy. Companies are finding it more cost-effective and easier to outsource many non-core operational functions to an external, specialized provider, which allows the internal IT staff to focus on more business-critical projects. The new ServiceDesk Plus – MSP Edition helps managed providers to deliver that specialized service to a number of customers using just a single installation of the software. The multi-tenancy capability of ServiceDesk Plus – MSP Edition also provides separate dashboards and reports to individual customers and reduces software maintenance costs. The service provider is able to perform all help desk and IT asset management functions, for all customers, from a single console.

ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus – MSP Edition is a complete web-based integrated package, including incident and service request management, self-service portal, knowledge base, IT asset management, even purchase and contract management. The new software is available in either a Standard Edition, providing the full range of basic help desk management functions, with a knowledge base and self service portal; or Professional Edition, which includes all the features found in the Standard Edition plus complete asset management.

"As a Managed Service Provider who has been in the IT helpdesk industry for over 18 years and used a number of different helpdesk applications to support over a hundred customers, we believe that we have finally found a solution that fulfills our requirements," said Jason Roberts, Technical Manager for TCNS, an IT and Network Support provider. "ManageEngine allows our customers to be kept up-to-date on a three-tier level - telephone, web and email - provides excellent SLA options based on individual customers, allows our technical staff to be kept updated instantly on all requests, and most of all, provides an easy-to-use reporting facility, which can be pre-scheduled, giving me the time to concentrate on other business requirements! It has all the features an MSP needs at a very affordable price. Now I can focus on my customers without worrying about the software, features or prices."

"In today’s challenging economic environment, managed service providers are facing ever-growing demands and higher-expectations with reduced profit margins," said Jayakumar Karumbasalam, product manager, ManageEngine. "MSPs are looking for a solution that manages multiple customers’ IT environments with the capability to configure each account separately, and without the long implementation times and high price tags so many management software vendors demand. As we do at ManageEngine, we built a product fitting that need and introduced ServiceDesk Plus – MSP Edition, a perfect solution if you are an MSP looking to focus on your customers and not spend too much time configuring the system itself."

Availability & Pricing

ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus – MSP Edition can be downloaded now from the website http://www.manageengine.com/products/service-desk-msp, where a 30-day trial with full functionality can also be obtained.

ADManager Plus Enhances Its Helpdesk Delegation Model

ManageEngine ADManager Plus Enhances Its Helpdesk Delegation Model to Support Complete Enterprise Management
Administrators can now use a single helpdesk technician to carry out multiple directory tasks across domains

ManageEngine announces the latest release of ManageEngine ADManager Plus, a Windows Active Directory Management and Reporting Solution, which now supports complete enterprise-wide helpdesk delegation. The new enterprise-wide delegation feature allows administrators to extend management capabilities by assigning multiple, complex directory management tasks to a trusted group of helpdesk technicians.

Previously, administrators using ADManager Plus could delegate just one role-per-helpdesk technician across domains, which meant an administrator had to assign each task to a different individual helpdesk technician and that technician could then execute that one task across domains. But now, with the new delegation feature announced today, ADManager Plus allows helpdesk technicians to perform multiple tasks across domains, thus making helpdesk management far simpler for the administrator.

Allowing helpdesk technicians to make a number of changes across multiple domains does not reduce the control and security that administrators have over their Active Directory implementations. With the new version of ManageEngine AD Manager Plus, administrators can restrict the access of a helpdesk technician to particular groups, ensuring more critical groups cannot inadvertently be harmed. Further, this software release also includes template-based helpdesk control, ensuring a delegated task is carried out in a specific, pre-defined way, and restricting the access of helpdesk technicians to particular templates only as allowed by the administrator.

"ADManager Plus has helped us define access limits for users and also monitor their actions; a critical activity for any financial enterprise like us," said Zolt an Faluvegi, Vice President, MSCI Barra, a provider of investment decision support tools to investment institutions worldwide.

"One advantage of using ADManager Plus is that the technician’s rights are assigned only within the product and do not translate into the same rights within Active Directory itself," said Manikandan Thangaraj, product manager, ManageEngine ADManager Plus. "Like our previous releases, it does not modify or override access rights in the native Active Directory. It is also easy to track each and every change a helpdesk technician initiates."

Pricing and Availability:

ManageEngine ADManager Plus is available now for download from the ManageEngine website at http://www.manageengine.co.uk/admanagerplus.

ManageEngine Announces the General Availability of ManageEngine Infrastructure Management Solution (IMS); an Affordable, Unified Platform for Managed Service Providers

ManageEngine IMS is the new ‘MSP–friendly’ offering that provides comprehensive Infrastructure Management

ManageEngine, today announced the general availability of ManageEngine Infrastructure Management Solution (IMS), a comprehensive management platform for Managed Service Providers (MSPs).

ManageEngine IMS is an integrated suite of network, systems and applications management software providing the capability to monitor heterogeneous computer environments, including networking gear; Windows, Linux and other UNIX platforms; application servers; LAN and WAN segments; ERP systems; databases; mail servers; Java transactions; and other web–based services. ManageEngine IMS offers a unified console and customer–centric views, supporting service level agreements (SLAs), enterprise–wide. The management platform provides complete visibility into each component and key insights to identify, isolate and troubleshoot specific problems, whether they originate in the network, servers, applications or any other part of the IT infrastructure. MSPs can see customer or site specific drill–down views and reports of their entire IT assets.

ManageEngine IMS, being a multi–tenant solution, enables MSPs to monitor multiple customer’s IT infrastructure with a single technology platform, lowering the cost of tools and operations. The solution proactively monitors all key performance metrics and associated SLAs and represents them in intuitive Business Dashboards. ManageEngine IMS also includes an integrated ITIL–ready Service Desk, which includes automated trouble ticketing, incident management, problem management, change management, a knowledge base, and more, reducing the complexity of workflows in production and making it easier for MSPs to run effective service operations.

ManageEngine IMS allows the MSP to create role–based ‘end–user accounts’ to view their own IT assets and the associated metrics and SLA status in real–time. This transparency of information enhances the trust in the relationship between the MSP and their end customer and thus strengthens it.

Traditionally, MSPs used either a mix–and–match collection of point products (open source or homegrown) or expensive end–to–end monitoring tools from high cost vendors. ManageEngine IMS offers a viable alternative by providing an integrated end–to–end monitoring platform that can monitor the health, availability and performance of today’s heterogeneous computing environments, at an affordable price.

"Managed Services is a very competitive market and there is a real need for a monitoring tool that can lower the cost of licensing, operations and maintenance," said Sridhar Iyengar, vice president of Global Solutions, ManageEngine. "ManageEngine IMS addresses this crucial need required to sustain a profitable Managed Services business. Our breadth of product portfolio in the IT Infrastructure Management space enabled us to react quickly to this growing market need and launch this new offering. We understand that the MSP’s goal is to offer comprehensive management of the IT infrastructure, keeping costs low and offering high quality SLAs. ManageEngine IMS is aimed at enabling the MSP to deliver superior value and increase customer satisfaction."

NetFlow Analyzer Enterprise Editon 7.0 released

ManageEngine Introduces Highly–Scalable NetFlow Analyzer Enterprise Edition 7; Distributed, Web–Based, Network Bandwidth Monitoring and Traffic Analysis Software

New Capabilities Make NetFlow Analyzer Enterprise Edition the Only Network Management Application to Natively Support Cisco NetFlow, Cisco NBAR and Cisco CBQoS

ManageEngine today announced NetFlow Analyzer Enterprise Edition version 7, a new generation of the company’s popular traffic analysis and network forensics application, designed for organizations managing hundreds or thousands of networking devices and links across a geographically distributed business.

NetFlow Analyzer Enterprise Edition 7 Snapshot

Only network monitoring application with native support for Cisco NetFlow, NBAR and CBQoS.

Highly–scalable; designed for distributed enterprise networks with hundreds or thousands of monitored devices.

Web-based, downloadable from website.

Management dashboard and monitoring reports completely user–customizable.

NetFlow Analyzer community

In addition to greater scalability, NetFlow Analyzer Enterprise Edition V7 also boasts a number of new, advanced monitoring and reporting capabilities, including the ability to report on Cisco CBQoS – or Class Based Quality of Service – monitoring. Cisco CBQoS allows administrators to establish Quality of Service policies to ensure business–critical network traffic is allocated the greatest bandwidth and resource availability. With the new, integrated reporting on Cisco CBQoS, ManageEngine becomes the only vendor to support Cisco NetFlow, Cisco NBAR and Cisco CBQoS out–of–the–box.

NetFlow Analyzer Enterprise Edition V7 also collects and aggregates sFlow and jFlow data, as well as any data formatted in compliance with the IP Flow Information Export (IPFIX) protocol, providing administrators with unmatched insight into the performance of their network elements and applications.

Should the volume of network traffic exceed, or the performance of a specific element or application fall below, an administrator’s pre–defined threshold, NetFlow Analyzer Enterprise Edition V7 automatically generates an alarm and a notification email is sent. This functionality can be customized to send alerts only during business hours.

Each network operator can create their own web–based management dashboard, which can be customized to display only the network hosts, devices, segments and applications monitored by that individual. Performance reporting is also completely customizable by using the above criteria, as well as by establishing a specific reporting time period. Reports may also be set to deliver performance data in real time.

The advanced functionality and scalability provided by NetFlow Analyzer Enterprise Edition V7 is complemented by the fast return–on–investment and ease–of–use for which ManageEngine is known. NetFlow Analyzer Enterprise Edition is completely web based; the application can be downloaded directly from the ManageEngine web site and with no hardware probes or appliances to install, the software can begin demonstrating its value immediately.

"We are confident NetFlow Analyzer Enterprise Edition 7 will quickly become a must–have for network administrators who today are challenged with providing optimum network performance while facing a growing workload and strict budget," said Jayakumar Karumbasalam, product manager, ManageEngine. "We are certain NetFlow Analyzer Enterprise Edition 7 will be as enthusiastically adopted by IT administrators as its predecessors were."

ManageEngine Announces The General Availability of ManageEngine IT360; An Affordable, Easy-to-Use, Business Service Management (BSM) Suite

ManageEngine’s Approach to BSM “Lite” Brings a Business-Impact Perspective to Infrastructure Management without the Up-Front Expense or Long Implementations of Traditional BSM
ManageEngine today announce the general availability of ManageEngine IT360, a highly capable, affordable and easy-to-use integrated business service management (BSM) solution. Beta customer feedback was key to the design of ManageEngine IT360, which illustrates the way in which the performance of servers, applications, network segments, and more, is impacting business operations.

ManageEngine IT360’s Business Dashboard interface displays the components that make up an organization’s network and the various business services those components support. Business Dashboards can be customized for specific job functions - from IT administrator up to CIO – with the level of detail displayed tailored for each role.

Feeding ManageEngine IT360’s Business Dashboard is an integrated suite of network, systems and applications management software. Often, administrators will manage their various hardware and software components as stand-alone entities, which creates silos of information and provides no insight into the way in which each component is working to support the business’ operations. ManageEngine IT360 breaks down these management barriers by providing a single, central management console through which the health, availability and performance of today’s heterogeneous computing environments can be monitored - including Windows, Linux and UNIX file servers; application servers; LAN and WAN segments; ERP systems; databases; mail servers; Java transactions; and other web-based services – and the level of support the computing environment is providing the business is understood.

ManageEngine IT360 goes a step further still by including an integrated ITIL ready Service Desk, which features automated trouble ticketing, complete with incident management, problem management, change management, a knowledge base, and more, reducing the complexity of workflows in production and making it easier for IT administrators to run effective operations. Ticket status is linked with individual business services in the individual dashboards.

"Our work over the course of the last seven years designing enterprise management software that is easier and more affordable allows us to today offer the comprehensive solution that is ManageEngine IT360 – taking Business Service Management to the masses," said Girish Mathrubootham, vice president, ManageEngine. "People want to know what is happening in their IT department and how that is affecting the business. But they don't want to spend a fortune or invest months implementing a solution that gives them the insight they’re looking for. We believe we have addressed the market's technology needs and budget concerns with this launch."

"At a time when budgets and cost cutting are being closely looked at, the ability to consolidate point solutions and view IT from a business performance point of view will prove invaluable" added Chris Green, Marketing Manager, Networks Unlimited

Availability and Pricing

ManageEngine IT360 is available immediately for download from the ManageEngine website. A fully functional 60-day free trial is offered. Base pricing starts at £3182.
ManageEngine Upgrades SupportCenter Plus

ManageEngine Upgrades SupportCenter Plus; Customer Support Suite Gets Multi–Tenancy Capabilities, Computer Telephony Integration, Remote Diagnostics and Repair, and...

SupportCenter Plus Still the Most Affordable Customer Support Suite Available

ManageEngine, announcing the latest version of ManageEngine SupportCenter Plus, customer support software featuring enterprise–level capabilities and the lowest price–point among all competitors.

SupportCenter Plus is now able to meet the needs of even the largest organization. The software’s new multi–tenancy capability means support professionals can simultaneously assist internal users from various company departments and business units, as well as help individual customers and customer groups, while working from a single console. Administrators may view and organize all pending employee and customer trouble–tickets, which makes it easy to prioritize follow–up and ensure the assigned technician is prepared to resolve the problem.

The new Computer Telephony Integration (CTI) feature further speeds the time to resolution. With CTI, when a user makes a phone call for assistance, SupportCenter Plus can automatically match the number from which the user is calling with information about the user’s computer configuration stored in a database. SupportCenter Plus can even automatically route the call to a specific technician based on the incoming phone number. In either scenario, the end–user will be talking with a technician better–equipped to solve their problem.

For those times when a user needs more than to be talked–through an issue, SupportCenter Plus new remote control capability allows a technician to –– with the user’s permission –– view PC configuration information and take corrective action to resolve the problem. With SupportCenter Plus, a problem can be fixed in minutes, when previously a user might have been asked to ship their PC to the technician for problem diagnosis and resolution.

"The direct correlation between superior customer service and customer longevity makes support a mission–critical function for any successful business," said Vinu Sreedharan, product manager, ManageEngine. "SupportCenter Plus allows an organization to better serve their customers, as well as their employees. With SupportCenter Plus, technicians can more quickly identify a problem’s cause and without ever leaving their desk, can solve that problem, wherever in the world the user may be. At ManageEngine, we’ll continue listening to our customers, advancing our solutions, while keeping our prices down."

Availability & Pricing

ManageEngine SupportCenter Plus is available as a downloadable file for both Windows and Linux platforms. A 30–day fully functional trial edition is freely available for evaluation from the website. Pricing starts at £634 for 5 users in Standard Edition. Perpetual licensing models are also available.

New Research Study of Applications Management

ManageEngine Underwrites New Research Study of Applications Management From an End-User Perspective

Aberdeen Group Research Findings Document Value of ManageEngine Approach to Managing Application Performance

ManageEngine, today announced the release of a new report from industry analyst firm Aberdeen Group, "Monitoring the End-User Experience: Improving Business Performance through Application Management." ManageEngine, report sponsor, is an underwriter of this research, which is now available as a free download.

Based on the responses of 125 organizations, Aberdeen's research finds that by managing applications from the perspective of the end-user, organizations get a more meaningful understanding of the way in which the infrastructure is supporting the business. In fact, Aberdeen analysts found that the top 20 percent of respondents in this research initiative were over twice as likely to improve brand reputation and seventy five percent more likely to improve employee productivity.

"While monitoring the availability of an application is critical and viewing its performance across the network is certainly important, this doesn't provide a complete picture," said Hyoun Park, research analyst, Aberdeen. "Our research finds that understanding how the application is performing from the perspective of the end-user, whether internal or external, is the real key to success for leading organizations."

"With applications such as ManageEngine,Applications Manager and Site24x7 Web Site Monitoring Service, we're providing administrators with the tools and services they need to manage their infrastructure from an end-user perspective," said Gibu K. Mathew, product manager, Application Performance Managment Solutions, ManageEngine. "Infrastructure Performance Management along with End User Experience Management, helps businesses deliver applications that meet end-user expectations. We're gratified to see the study results bear that out."

Download the study here

ManageEngine Releases OS Deployer

ManageEngine OS Deployer creates an exact disk image of a given system -- including operating system, configuration files and all applications -- and deploys that image to multiple systems simultaneously, making it ideal for rapid bare-metal provisioning. Standardizing desktops can increase security while reducing support and management costs.

The new software plays an important role in end-user support activities. A significant number of help desk tickets are related to corrupted operating systems and associated errors that demand an OS re-deployment. ManageEngine OS Deployer makes this easy, allowing administrators to simply push a new desktop configuration to the end-user.

Key features and benefits provided by OS Deployer include:

Centralized disk image capturing

Pay-as-You-Grow Licensing Model

ManageEngine Upgrades VoIP Quality Monitoring Software; Now Supports up to 1000 Simultaneous VoIP Calls; Introduces Pay–as–You–Grow Licensing Model for VoIP Service Providers

ManageEngine announce an update to its Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) quality monitoring solution, VQManager, focused on meeting the management requirements of VoIP service providers.

The latest release, VQManager 6.2, greatly improves on the application's existing VoIP packet processing capability, making it possible to support larger VoIP environments, monitoring up to 1000 simultaneous VoIP calls. And because larger environments are apt to have multiple operating systems, the new VQManager is designed to perform equally well on different versions and flavors of Windows and Linux operating systems.

To assist growing VoIP service providers, ManageEngine is now also making VQManager available in a licensing model where pricing is based upon the number of simultaneous calls to be monitored. Service providers leasing VoIP trunks on an 'x' dollar per month per trunk basis can now affordably purchase a VoIP monitoring solution to manage present traffic volumes instead of having to acquire expensive, huge-capacity software so early in the business' growth phase. As their VoIP network grows, service providers can upgrade VQManager to higher concurrent call licenses, paying only the difference between the existing and the new number of licenses.

"VQManager is an invaluable tool in our VoIP monitoring arsenal giving us the ability to provide detailed live and historical end-to-end QoS and call flow analysis," said Rob Mainor, executive vice president of business development at PanTerra Networks. "The GUI interface is intuitive, highly adaptive and provides us with the kind of in-depth analysis necessary to ensure success with sophisticated VoIP deployments."

"The improvements gone into VQManager 6.2 have come as a result of months of direct interaction with several VQManager customers in the VoIP service provider community," said Sridhar Iyengar, director, Product Management at ManageEngine. "Service providers look to differentiate themselves from the competition in the quality of VoIP services offered, all the while keeping costs down. VQManager looks forward to helping them achieve this."

VQManager is a VoIP quality monitoring software that detects and analyzes SIP, H.323 & Skinny protocols along with RTP and RTCP media. The solution monitors each and every call in real-time, throughout the day, to provide the VoIP engineer a sound troubleshooting platform to diagnose and analyze VoIP performance degradations. VQManager's deep, packet-level analysis of a VoIP call allows a wide range of critical information to be reported, including: Protocol type, codec used, octets transferred, call initiation time, call set-up time, call ringing time, duration of call, call participants' names, URL and IP address, and call participant-specific QoS values viz. MOS, delay, jitter, packet loss and R Factor. Over 30 built-in reports, including concurrent call reports, carrying months of call data, help service providers make better capacity planning decisions.

Key feature additions found in VQManager 6.2 include:

Improved performance to support environments with up to 1000 simultaneous VoIP calls

An exclusive licensing and pricing model for VoIP Service Providers based on concurrent calls

Full support for Cisco CallManager 6.x and 7.1 environments

Support for processing Avaya S8700 CDRs, Cisco Unified Communications Manager(CUCM) 6.1 and 7.0 CDRs

Ability to create 'Schedulers' for predefined reports and e-mail them as PDF files.

Enhanced multi-day reporting to provide day-specific averages on ASR, ACD, MOS etc.

Pricing & Availability

ManageEngine VQManager is available as a downloadable file for both Windows and Linux platforms. A 30-day fully functional professional edition is freely available for evaluation from the website. The new service provider pricing starts at £685 for monitoring up to 50 concurrent calls.

New Version of NetFlow Analyzer

ManageEngine Introduces New Version of NetFlow Analyzer; Provides Greater Visibility into Network Traffic Patterns and Application Performance.

ManageEngine announce the release of the latest version of ManageEngine NetFlow Analyzer, a traffic analysis and network forensics application. Featuring completely customizable administrator dashboards, site-to-site network traffic monitoring and volume-based usage billing, the new NetFlow Analyzer is designed to meet the needs of enterprise IT administrators as well as service providers.

With NetFlow Analyzer, IT administrators create management dashboards allowing them to monitor those parts of the network infrastructure that are most critical to them, depending upon the individual administrator’s role and the business’ priorities.. A single dashboard may incorporate multiple widgets, each pulling information from various data sources, including NetFlow/sFlow. The result is a comprehensive view of network usage and performance metrics without the need for complex searches and drill-downs. NetFlow Analyzer comes pre-bundled with more than fifty such widgets, making dashboard customization exceedingly easy right out of the box. And because NetFlow Analyzer collects reports from numerous network segments and devices, and presents them in a single view, it is far simpler and faster to identify the root cause of any issue, reducing the mean time to repair (MTTR).

The new NetFlow Analyzer’s Site-to-Site traffic monitoring capability helps businesses track network traffic patterns between separate physical locations, ensuring business-critical applications have the right amount of bandwidth allocated for maximum performance. This level of understanding is vital for the day-to-day performance of existing applications, as well as for planning infrastructure growth. It is also key to IT departments that chargeback business units for the volume of network traffic generated, and for service providers who bill customers based on volume and speed.

"NetFlow Analyzer has been a great tool for our traffic analysis and capacity planning," said Kenneth P. Huntsberger, director, Information Technology/Systems, Groundwater and Environmental Services (GES). "The addition of a customizable dashboard and single click email has made it possible for us to view priority information faster and troubleshoot quicker. “The ’Site to Site monitoring’ feature makes the traffic analysis between specific locations easier too. I'd gladly recommend this solution to anyone who is looking for a better ROI on a traffic analysis tool."

"ManageEngine NetFlow Analyzer 7.5 is designed to meet the needs of IT departments that are operating leaner while being held to the same high standards as ever," said Sridhar Iyengar, director, Product Management at ManageEngine. "DSCP-based alerts, customized information delivery, faster troubleshooting, and single click reporting all add up to provide unmatched visibility and traffic forensics capabilities Administrators can look to ManageEngine to continue bringing about ever greater capabilities in NetFlow Analyzer, including Network Behavior Anomaly Detection (NBAD) and MSSQL support in the not-too-distant future."
Pricing & Availability

ManageEngine NetFlow Analyzer is available now for download directly from the website. Pricing starts at £607.64 for monitoring up to 10 interfaces. A 30-day free evaluation, with full functionality, is also available.

Installed and Fully Functional in <30 min

New ManageEngine Enterprise-Ready Network Management Software Can Be Installed and Fully Functional in Less Than 30 Minutes

Includes a Highly-Customizable Dashboard; Access to Automated Network Change & Configuration Management (NCCM) and NetFlow Integration Plug-Ins

ManageEngine announce a major upgrade to the company's flagship network management application, ManageEngine OpManager, designed to make network infrastructure monitoring and management faster, easier, more capable and affordable than ever.

The new version, ManageEngine OpManager 8, at start-up now displays an "Intro" tab within the application's web-based management console. This tab steps an IT administrator through set-up by dividing configuration tasks into four categories: 'Discover,' 'Visualize,' 'Manage' and 'Reports.' All devices in an enterprise network may be discovered and monitoring of performance and availability can begin, all in less than 30 minutes. Additionally, the customizable dashboard is more extensible, now holding up to 92 pre-defined widgets, which allows administrators to build personalized monitoring dashboards to suit individual responsibilities, even configuring rotating CCTV views of their favorite dashboards. And because Network Change & Configuration Management (NCCM) can be such an arduous, on-going task, ManageEngine offers an NCCM plug-in for OpManager 8, automating most of the processes involved, from running configuration back-ups to ensuring policy compliance through configuration control, and much more. Lastly, ManageEngine's NetFlow plug-in allows administrators to integrate detailed information from NetFlow, and six other popular flow monitoring tools, for a single, comprehensive view of network performance.

"ManageEngine OpManager helps our company keep higher uptime on all network/server resources," said David Henry, system administrator, AOSmith Electrical Products Company. "Having the ability to proactively monitor all of our devices is very important. We know the minute a resource is in trouble and can rapidly adjust to the situation to keep our internal customers running and happy. OpManager is an ever improving monitoring solution with new features in the latest version 8 release such as greater reporting capabilities, additional performance monitoring, failover support and an enhanced intro page with great overview of all of our devices. In my opinion, it is the most beneficial tool we own. There is a greater ROI with OpManager than with the other more costly monitoring systems like Tivoli, OpenView or SCCM's Operations Manager. Not mention the ease of installation and configuration as compared to OpenView or Tivoli."

"Right from the initial configuration settings, to monitoring, alerting and reporting, OpManager 8 makes a landmark leap in terms of ease of use," said Girish Mathrubootham, vice president, ManageEngine. "With the new network-specific plug-ins, enhancements and features added, OpManager 8 offers network management that is not just holistic, but more importantly, easy to use."

OpManager is a comprehensive network and IT infrastructure monitoring platform that offers advanced fault and performance management functionalities across WAN, VoIP services, network devices, servers, applications, databases and other IT infrastructure. A free version, complete with almost all functionality, except add-ons and support, is available for managing up to 10 devices for an unlimited amount of time.

Release announcement - ADManager Plus v4.3

ManageEngine ADManager Plus Enterprise Software Now Simplifies Management of Bulk Groups in Microsoft Active Directory

Announcing the release of ADManager Plus version 4.3, we've enhanced the popular Active Directory management and reporting solution by adding the ability to easily create and modify multiple Active Directory Groups.

Administrators can use Active Directory groups to assign network and systems access rights to multiple users simultaneously, as opposed to individually configuring user accounts. Unfortunately, when using native Active Directory tools, configuring groups and assigning various group attributes becomes a complex procedure involving numerous steps. Furthermore, once created, groups need to be maintained to ensure users have access to all appropriate resources as the IT infrastructure evolves, while also guarding against security vulnerabilities that may arise. As the number of groups in the enterprise increases, so too does the management complexity and risk for mistake.

ManageEngine ADManager Plus version 4.3 centralizes and automates much of this work across not just a single group, but now across multiple groups. Through a single, central console, IT administrators can add (from a CSV file) or remove multiple group members, define multiple attributes and configure exchange attributes across multiple groups in the enterprise. ADManager Plus also offers more than 100 reports out-of-the-box, including security reporting, which allows administrators to analyze group permission levels, an important part of network security assessments.

"ADManager Plus has helped us identify the groups and group policy objects that have not been used. We simply have to generate the reports to get all these details," said Ronald Stoffels, Medewerker Server Cluster, Back Office ICT Services. "Moreover I found ADManager Plus to be the best amongst all the other tools I tested."

"The new group management capabilities within ADManager Plus version 4.3 make this application even more valuable to IT administrators in the larger enterprises," said Manikandan Thangaraj, product manager, ADManager Plus. "We'll continue to provide management solutions that simplify and secure the largest computing infrastructures, without requiring customers to spend millions of dollars or take months to install."

ManageEngine ADManager Plus version 4.3 can be downloaded directly from the website http://www.manageengine.co.uk. A 30-day trial with full functionality is available for evaluation. In-line with customer-centric core values, ManageEngine built the new version of ServiceDesk Plus based in large on suggestions from within the “ManageEngine Roadmap Idea Box,” an online community for IT administrators using ManageEngine software. The most prominent new ServiceDesk Plus features come as a direct result of the community’s input, including:

Flash reports – filter and consolidate information in a single report.

And more! – including color codes for prioritizing help desk requests, MAC OS scan support and standalone workstation auditing (for scanning assets that are not part of the corporate network).

“ServiceDesk Plus 7.5 is designed to support help desk technicians as they work under ever-growing demands and high-expectations,” said Girish Mathrubootham, vice president, ManageEngine. “The new features we’re introducing today will benefit even the largest IT organizations, particularly those implementing ITIL guidelines.”

David Howell, AdventNet/ManageEngine’s European Director, added that “In our 12 year existence, the philosophy of close co-operation with the customer has been paramount. I am very pleased that this still remains as strong today as it was in 1996 and we continue to see great benefits in this partnership approach with our customers.”

ITIL Laid Bare: Read The New White Paper

Take A Different Look At ITIL With Adventnet's Alex D Paul

Introduction
"After a few utterly boring Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) presentations and speeches completely based on the blue book in Las Vegas, L.A, London, Sao Paulo, Singapore, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney, I thought I should try
writing what IT managers really need to know in an interesting way so that they’ll actually read it."

"With all due respect, the blue book covers every aspect of ITIL Service Support and is the ultimate reference guide. This is for all those who don’t have the time and patience, but still quickly want the juice. I didn’t find an interesting ITIL Service Support article and here is my attempt in writing one. I hope you find it useful."

WiFi Manager: Hotspot Management For ISPs

WiFi Manager Addresses The Challenges of Hotspot Management
WiFi Manager allows Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISP) to easily, effectively and centrally manage their infrastructures, such as Access Points, Wireless gateways, Switches and Routers deployed at hundreds or thousands of remote locations. With support for devices from most of the prominent vendors in the market today, WiFi Manager is truly a multi vendor network management solution.

WiFi Manager automatically discovers the devices in the network, builds up an inventory database and monitors the infrastructure continuously for their health and other important parameters like the bandwidth used, the number of users associated, signal strength available to the connected users etc.

WiFi Manager also allows configuration of the important parameters (radio settings, security settings, services settings etc.,) and management of device firmware, giving WISP administrators full control of their deployment from a single central web console.

Is Your Network Safe From Attacks?

Security Manager Plus - Network Security Scanner and Vulnerability Scanning

With increasingly sophisticated attacks on the rise, the ability to quickly mitigate network vulnerabilities is imperative. Vulnerabilities if left undetected pose a serious security threat to enterprise systems and can leave vital corporate data exposed to attacks by hackers. For organizations, it means extended system downtimes and huge loss of revenue and productivity.

Vulnerability Assessment is a process of identifying the effectiveness of an enterprise network's security posture. The process qualifies the type of assets in the network, the probable areas for compromise and how to remediate vulnerabilities and protect assets. The core function of Security Manager Plus, network security scanner, is vulnerability scanning & detection of industry-known vulnerabilities on network assets and to offer remediation solutions.

Security Manager Plus enables you to scan assets and asset groups, view vulnerable assets and their complete security information, e-mail scan reports and take appropriate action to safeguard your assets based on the remediation solutions provided.

Customise Your Applications Monitoring

ManageEngine Applications Manager has added the ability to create user defined Custom Monitors

Application Manager helps you build, out of the box monitor types in addition to those that are already present by default.

This feature allows you to monitor applications and devices that are not supported out-of-the-box. With Custom Monitors, you can even associate in house scripts in a more standardized manner, plus write monitoring code in any programming language - Java, Jython, Ruby, Microsoft .NET, Perl, PHP, Unix Shell Scripts, Windows Batch Files, VBS Scripts or in 'C' etc., and integrate the monitoring stats into Applications Manager for Reporting, Alerting and Service Views etc.

Enhanced Monitoring For Your SAP Server

Applications Manager Extends Support for SAP Server Monitoring.

ManageEngine Applications Manager has been upgraded to include monitoring of performance and availability for SAP deployments.

The complex architecture of SAP presents a challenge to when drilling down to know the root cause analysis of any bottle neck in the performance. The SAP monitor in Applications Manger helps monitor the application tier, database tier, web client user experience and the servers. With this, a SAP administrator can quickly identify any impending problem, send alerts and automate corrective action.

"We have found the URL sequences particularly useful as they handled the sequence of https login with redirects followed by replaying an entire use case of the web application and finally logout. It has been extremely well received within the department." said John MacEnri, Technical Architect, Department of Communication, Energy and Natural Resources, Ireland. "Agentless application performance monitoring is another big factor that tilted our buy decision."

Manage patches over the Internet - simply!

PatchQuest has overcome the difficulty of managing patches for remote sites and mobile workers. Consider the common scenarios:

Systems that are spread across different geographical locations or offices over the internet (applicable primarily to Service Providers)

Laptops that are often disconnected from the network (mobile users on the move)

Systems situated behind a NAT/PAT firewall or router (systems in different branches of an enterprise)

PatchQuest Release 4.3 is powered with an agent that can be used to manage such systems, where maintaining a dedicated network tunnel is not feasible; therefore allowing the communication over the internet. The only prerequisite is that the PatchQuest Agents should be able to contact the PatchQuest Server over the web (using HTTP).

PatchQuest is an automated, patch management software for distributing and managing patches, security hotfixes and updates across heterogeneous networks comprising of Windows, Red Hat Linux and Debian Linux systems, in just a few simple clicks.

ADManager Plus Cleans Up Active Directory

ADManager Plus has been upgraded with a complete solution to Clean up the Active Directory. The increase in size of an organisation and the continual change in roles and departments of employees, necessitates a need to allocate newer resources and proper management of unused accounts. These unused accounts present in the active directory are to be handled with utmost caution to avoid unauthorized access, which questions the security of your network. Any dormant/inactive account can turn malicious with time providing leverage for hackers. They are to be spotted regularly through continuous audits, and disabled or deleted.

ADManager Plus understands the difficulties faced by an administrator with conventional command line tools or scripts to identify then delete, disable or move unused accounts in Active Directory. It provides a single click solution for the administrator/help desk technician to generate a report on all inactive users/computers present in a Domain or Organizational unit for a given period of time. Using this report he/she can delete, disable or rearrange these suspect objects as needed.

Netflow Analyzer:The new 'Boss of QoS'

Netflow Analyzer now supports QoS Monitoring by adding DSCP mapping to its latest version V6.1.

In addition, users can create their own DSCP Groups to monitor class-based traffic patterns on per DSCP or per DSCP Group basis.

With this release, NetFlow Analyzer now enters the arena of QoS Monitoring -- the most crucial aspect of any network performance enhancement activity. QoS helps enterprises effectively allocate their existing bandwidth for high productivity applications. QoS defines the minimum level of service quality guaranteed for an application and is typically assigned for business critical applications to safeguard them against any kind of bandwidth crunch. An application with a higher QoS gets priority in receiving bandwidth allocation over one with a lower QoS value. DSCP mapping is the latest offering that is much more powerful than the earlier TOS (Type of Service). DSCP helps in verifying lapse in the enforcement of QoS policy like, were the traffic flows, whether packets are correctly labeled and marked as belonging to a particular QoS setting. NetFlow Analyzer 6 General Access is available for a free 30-day trial.

Whats new in NFA 6.1

Network snapshot: Quickly identify the overall traffic on your network and the busiest devices

Enhanced QoS reporting: User definable DSCP groupings and application level visibility into DSCP

Comparison reports: Compare traffic patterns on different devices and across different time intervals

Alerting on IP Groups: Ability to create alerts on IP groups

Note : NetFlow Analyzer 6.1 is only available as a full download. Service Pack to migrate to 6.1 from earlier builds will be available later.

Better Network Delivery With CISCO IPSLA

Now OpManager offers more powerful network control with CISCO's IPSLA technology.

With the help of an intuitive network dashboard, OpManager brings links availability and performance information to the fore. The average availability dashboard gives an immediate bird's eye view of the availability across the entire network in the specified timeframe, while the distribution chart shows the spread of availability within the same timeframe.

Sometimes a terrible network quality may be just as worse as no availability at all. A round trip time of 200ms across a link where the expected round trip time is 60ms is definitely unacceptable. The top 10 SLA violation chart displays the recent locations that witnessed an unexpected communication delay.

However, merely knowing that an outage or a delay has occurred is not sufficient. OpManager allows you to drill down to the map level displaying the various paths of communication between the source and destination and the round trip time across each underlying link.

OpManager, with CISCO's IPSLA technology, monitors the round trip information between the various sources and their targets and evaluates them against the expected average round trip time. Consecutively, any RTT violation across a link and its impact on the performance of the channel and the network as a whole is realized and appropriate violation and performance degradation alerts are raised.

NEW: Self-Service Portal Cuts Admin Time

ADSelfService Plus allows an employee to reset passwords, unlock accounts and update personal information on Active Directory, without assistance and in real time.

ADSelfService Plus also helps the administrator to implement stronger password policies and reduce help-desk workload, addressing the most important help-desk call to reset password by handing it over to the end-user himself. Being web based and also available with every member in your organization, information updated with ADSelfService Plus will provide the management with the most recent and accurate information.

Self Reset Password
Self Reset password with ADSelfService Plus allows any end user to reset his own password before expiry or when he forgets his existing password. The password can be reset by the end user himself or by his trusted co-worker for whom he has given consent or privileges through the tool. Further ADSelfService Plus addresses the productivity loss involved while processing these Password Reset tickets.

Self Unlock Account
Lockout of accounts results when the user is not able to input his password correctly for the permitted number of attempts in alignment with the Account Lockout Policy. The permitted number of attempts depends the Account Lockout Policy configured by your administrator in the Active Directory. To unlock your account traditionally any user has to raise a ticket to the administrator or the help desk which can be totally eliminated with the help of ADSelfService Plus. The end-user can Unlock his own account by,

Answering a set of Secret Questions and Answers known only to him

With the help a trusted co-worker who can unlock his account. The co-worker is entrusted during enrollment.

End User Self Update of his own personal Info:
Any organization will always prefer information to be current and up to date in order to formulate effective growth strategies with the most recent information. This requires a real time and continuous update of data by all the users involved. An End user's information like contact details, status, telephone numbers, alternate email-id, keeps changing with time and will need a continuous update in the Active Directory. ADSelfService Plus web based user friendly interface helps end users to update / modify information fields set by the administrator, immediately and in real time in the AD.

Opmanager MSP one click remote control

The new OpManager MSP Remote Control Add-On enables you to work on your customer servers and desktops right from your office or home. It works over internet and is fast, secure, and smooth.

Firewall Friendly Architecture
OpManager Remote uses only the common ports used for browsing and hence it doesn't mandate punching a hole in your customer firewall. The remote control gateway, bundled along with the OpManager Central server, enables the required communication tunnel for you to see the remote server.

Secure, Fast, and Smooth.
OpManager encrypts the data between the remote machine and you, ensuring that you don't expose corporate data over the Internet. Moreover, the compression logic and the intelligent screen rendering mechanism ensure that you use fewer resources without sacrificing quality, ensuring a smooth experience.

Install in seconds
OpManager helps you to deploy agents in bulk. From the OpManager central interface select the list of servers/desktops and -> Click install. The agents will be automatically pushed to the remote machines, installed, and started automatically. And in an unlikely event of installation failure, you can manually download-and and install the agent

Be There
Once the agents are installed you are ready to access the servers remotely. Every device snapshot page would then display a "Remote Control" button for you to click and start a remote session. You may use the Flash viewer, ActiveX viewer, or the Java viewer. You can switch to the full screen view, take control of the server at the click of a button, and be there in real-time supporting your customers.

Be accountable - track remote sessions
Every time when your technical team remotely connects your customer machines OpManager maintains a record of wh why, who, and how long the remote session was established.

ManageEngine's Firewall Analyzer has achieved OPSEC (Open Platform for Security) certification from Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. Through OPSEC certification, AdventNet's ManageEngine Firewall Analyzer seamlessly integrates with Check Point's market-leading VPN-1(R) network security gateway.

ManageEngine Firewall Analyzer software is an enterprise-class, vendor-neutral software for firewall, VPN, and proxy server log analysis.
PassTrix Renamed PasswordManager Pro (PMP)

In order to keep product names closely allied with their functionality, PasswordManager Pro becomes the new name for the ManageEngine Password Management product, formerly known as PassTrix.

Networks Unlimited, the official ManageEngine distributor in the UK, is working hard to make the changes as swiftly as possible but there will be a transitionary period of some weeks whilst documentation and web sites are updated. The change concerns only the name and and does not affect the product, its specification or pricing.

In the meantime, PasswordManager Pro continues to provide a secure, centralised, web-based facility for control of access to shared administrative/privileged passwords of any 'enterprise resource' such as servers, databases, network devices, applications et al.

CWL Systems Chooses OpManager MSP Edition

Cambridgeshire-based managed service provider, CWL Systems, chooses OpManager MSP Edition for centralized remote management of its customer networks.

CWL Systems deploys and manages IT solutions that create strong business value and help customers build a more confident future. Focusing on back-office solutions and network infrastructure with a vertical focus in the financial and legal sectors, CWL works in partnership with clients to deliver successful projects that meet precise business objectives. Uncompromising quality standards and a large customer network have driven CWL Systems to optimize network management with OpManager.

Recently, CWL Systems have installed probes in ten customers sites, and have already received requests for more. Simon Murawski, senior network engineer at CWL Systems, says, "It will be a steady increase. We have 12 probe licenses currently and will have to buy more within the next week or so as we install the next few customers. Our plan is to install probes on all of our customers' networks that we cover. So the number of probes we are potentially going to be having will grow quite large".

After using a number of other competing network management products, CWL Systems narrowed down their search for a complete remote network management tool to OpManager. "The easy to use user interface is one of the reasons we chose OpManager over its competing products. Its well designed from the perspective of the customer. Also the dashboard status views are good for an instant graphical overview of all the customers' sites", said Simon. "The ability to monitor pretty much any device such as Cisco routers and firewalls, printers, servers, hubs switches and websites all within a very intuitive web interface are definite plus points." he added.

"Further, the addition of specific monitoring of exchange and active directory is of great help. While some of the competing products do allow easier addition of other monitors, they lack the overall, well put together integrated look and feel of OpManager." The fact that the MSP edition supports multiple customers with the probes, and the fact that the probe doesn't need to be installed on every monitored device is great. Other products require an agent to be installed on all devices, which can make the roll-out to a new site slow.

"MSPs require an enterprise-class monitoring tool that does not compromise on performance but provides an easy and appealing interface", said Dev Anand, the Product Manager for MSP Solutions at AdventNet. "At OpManager we target efficient performance at affordable price points."

ManageEngine Case History: Prolog UK

ServiceDesk Plus transforms Prolog's IT management

More than ever, organisations are driving their IT managers to focus IT spend where the business will get best value and biggest return. No longer can managers adopt the ‘buy Big Blue’ approach, seeking the perceived security of the big vendors whilst, inevitably, paying a premium on price.

At least, that’s the theory. In practice, human nature dictates that we tend to be wary of new vendors, no matter how good the product or its price. In the past, return on investment was been much abused by salesmen in an attempt to break down this barrier. Today, that is not good enough. IT Managers need to ‘experience’ the product, the service and the people involved, before parting with the company’s hard-earned cash.

This was the scenario faced by Richard Mawson, Head of IT for marketing services provider Prolog. For too long, Prolog’s 10-strong IT department had been using helpdesk software that had served well but was well past its prime. Despite the usual reluctance of users to change, Richard could see the unreliability of the software was impacting business performance and decided to replace it.

Having consulted the big names amongst the helpdesk software providers, Richard was surprised and disappointed to learn that his relatively modest requirements would incur a price of more than £9,000. After a little more searching, though, Richard came across ServiceDesk Plus, part of the ManageEngine range of software tools offered by the India-based software developer Adventnet.

With a feature set to match the market leaders and at less than half the price, ServiceDesk ticked all the boxes as far as Richard’s requirements were concerned. But could he put that all-important trust in a company unknown to him:

“Immediately, their web site was very encouraging. Case studies, awards, demonstrations, good literature and free trials – it’s all there. The forum was very active, which I think is always a good sign, offering some really useful support. But it was the people that really convinced me. Unusually, their software developers provide the technical support, so when you call with a query, you’re actually talking to the guys who designed the software. You really feel you’re getting good service.”

Having bought ServiceDesk, and the honeymoon period over, has the decision to go with ManageEngine paid off?

“ServiceDesk has transformed the way we deal with IT issues and greatly improved our service delivery. The queuing and business-rules features are excellent and the knowledge base is invaluable. We can now log each job and track it through to resolution, keeping a dialogue going with the end user.”

“It’s working so well that we’re considering expanding the reach of the helpdesk to a broader, centralised facilities management role - a sort of one-stop shop for all technical issues. Support from the UK distributor, Networks Unlimited, and from Adventnet continues to reassure me we made the right move.”

Any regret’s about not going with one of the better-known vendors?

“To the contrary. Most businesses, like Prolog, aren’t prepared to pay over-the-top prices just for the pleasure of working with a big brand. It’s my duty to get the best value for the business and, so long as new vendors put effort into building the customer relationship, then customers like me will make the switch. In this respect, ManageEngine is exemplary.”

Prolog UK
Prolog is one of Britain’s leading outsourced service providers for e-commerce solutions and mail order fulfilment operating a national storage and distribution infrastructure and advanced systems technology.

Prolog Marketing serves both commercial and public sector clients with POS handling, bulk literature storage and distribution, mailing services, bulk collation and packing and database management. These core services are supported by design, publishing and in-house print.

Prolog Connect provides inbound/outbound telephone marketing and customer services whilst Prolog Logistics specialises in national and international supply chain solutions.

ManageEngine Case History: SEEDA

Case History: South East England Development Agency (SEEDA)

SEEDA is one of those split-personality organisations. On the one hand dealing with the frantic commercial demands of small businesses and entrepreneurs, on the other hand having to comply with the rigorous regulatory requirements that come with being a government-based organisation. Seldom can there be a more wide ranging set of demands placed on an IT department.

Ask Carl Lawton, he should know. As the Senior Systems Administrator, Carl has responsibility for delivering reliable and efficient ICT services to approximately 500 internal customers, involved in regeneration and property development projects. On top of that, the IT Department is subject to annual auditing by the National Audit Office and Carl must continuously provide audit logs to support compliance with governance procedures. It is important that SEEDA`s IT reports are accurate and factual.

After six years of rapid growth, not surprisingly, SEEDA’s IT systems were beginning to creak a little under the strain. In particular, the helpdesk was an old sales-based application with an active directory that was not working and some old Crystal reports that were just inadequate. Carl recognised that a web-based solution would make life a lot easier and immediately looked at the big names - Remedy, Royal Blue, Trackit, etc. Back on his feet again (he fell over when he saw the price), Carl found ManageEngine’s ServiceDesk Plus, a web based help desk software tool with outstanding tracking and asset management capabilities. Functionality was on a par with the big names but with a much more sensible price.

Carl soon put ServiceDesk Plus to work on the 18 strong IT department located across the three SEEDA sites, prior to rolling out across the rest of the organisation. Immediately, ServiceDesk’s ability to log and track issues meant that incoming calls were fewer, freeing up the IT team in the process. Reporting on trends in service requirements (e.g most frequent callers) also meant that training issues could be identified and addressed. In this way, ServiceDesk Plus also provided the reporting required for regulatory and governance purposes.

“The affordability of ServiceDesk has removed one of the biggest barriers to maintaining our IT infrastructure and improving service delivery,” says Carl. “The combination of high functionality, low cost, simple, web-based software is a feature of the ManageEngine range that fits our requirements well and offers the benefits of a single source for our IT management solutions in the future.”

SEEDA
The South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) is one of nine Regional Development Agencies in England. SEEDA’s main role is to drive economic development in the South East. SEEDA’s work covers the same geographical area as the Government Office for the South East. Both organisations cover an area stretching from Kent to Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, to Milton Keynes at the northern end of the region and West Berkshire in the west.
SEEDA’s work includes

*regional regeneration
*making the South East a competitive location for business
*encouraging companies to invest in the South East
*ensuring that the right skills are available to match the needs of the South East labour market

ManageEngine Case History: Pendragon

Pendragon Corporate Services Take On Applications Manager
Many IT managers will tell you that hosted IT services are more about trust than technology. This being so, then the hosted service provider who manages clients’ critical business applications, must be the ultimate example of the ‘trusted supplier’. When that client is the UK Government, you know that the service provider must be a bit special.

Such is the case with Pendragon. For the past 7 years, Pendragon has provided Consultancy Services to both the Public & Private Sector, including high profile Government Departments, managing key servers and applications whilst providing penetration testing, secure networking and numerous other support services.

Central to Pendragon’s role is the hosting of 20 or so servers (covering over 60 Government websites and numerous Charity and Private Sector systems) running a range of heavyweight applications (eg Oracle) plus front-end web management services the likes of Apache and Tomcat. All the applications are running flat out, web servers receiving up to 22 million hits per month (for the bewildered, that’s 500 per minute), so monitoring and management are crucial. So crucial that Ian Poole, Pendragon’s Technical Director, decided that they needed the very best application-monitoring tool available.

The search was not straightforward, though, with several contenders demonstrating incompatibility to a greater or lesser degree. Then, after a quick Google, Ian came across ManageEngine’s Applications Manager.

“ We were pleasantly surprised,” says Ian. “We hadn’t heard of ManageEngine before but the features and the prices looked so good, we had to try it.”

And try it he did. Having put Applications Manager through its paces over an extended trial period, Ian came to the conclusion, “Some tools could meet some of our requirements some of the time, but Applications Manager is without doubt the only software tool on the planet that can do the lot.”

“Support was brilliant. We only had one small issue but the support team at Adventnet provided a piece of code that soon resolved the problem. Very quickly, Applications Manager had helped iron out the bugs in the client’s content management system and has become a vital element in our service delivery ever since.”

“There’s no room for error in this business. Increasingly stringent regulatory processes and governance policies will continue to make service levels a priority. Application Manager plays an important part in keeping control of SLA’s and, thanks to its reporting capabilities, we can respond to demands for accountability. Peace of mind is a wonderful thing!”

As the sun sets over Pendragons offices in Bristol, London & Cheltenham, the country rests peaceful in the knowledge that Pendragon and Applications Manager are doing their bit to keep the wheels of government turning.

Pendragon Global Consulting
Pendragon provides a broad range of business services and consultancy, including IT management. Engineers and support teams possess an extensive range of experience and expertise. These include customised industry standard applications or bespoke systems developed from scratch. The focus is on optimised IT, ranging from properly configured and deployed desktop PCs through to fully integrated, enterprise-wide and future-proof solutions.
